Ralls County, Missouri
.Ralls County, located in the northeastern region of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on November 16, 1820. It was named in honor of Daniel Ralls, a Missouri state legislator who played a significant role in its formation. The county covers an area of about 483 square miles and, as of the 2020 census, has a population of approximately 10,359.
Before the arrival of European settlers, the land was inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Mississippian Mound Builders and later the Missouri and Osage tribes. In the early 19th century, settlers started coming to the area, predominantly from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia, attracted by its fertile land and ample natural resources.
The county seat, New London, was established in 1819, just a year before Ralls County itself. New London served essential functions in the early days of the county, such as a resting spot for travelers on the way to the booming salt industry in Louisiana, Missouri.
Ralls County witnessed multiple historical events, such as the Honey War in 1839, a bloodless dispute over land between Missouri and Iowa that was resolved by the U.S. Supreme Court. Besides this, there was a small engagement between Union Soldiers and local Confederate sympathizers during the American Civil War.
At present, Ralls County thrives in agriculture, primarily focusing on the production of corn, soybeans, and livestock. The county is also working to promote tourism through historical sites, parks, and outdoor recreational activities.
Here is a fun fact for you: Ralls County is home to the historic Mark Twain Cave, a cave system in Missouri that dates back thousands of years. This cave inspired the iconic author Mark Twain, who was born nearby in the city of Hannibal, to write about a cave in his famous novel, "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer."
