Saline County is located in the central region of the great state of Missouri. Established on November 25, 1820, it was one of the earliest counties in the state, named after an abundance of salt springs found in the area. The county was formed from a part of Cooper County, and its county seat is Marshall.

Saline County played a significant role in the early history of Missouri, especially during the mid-19th century. The area was predominantly agricultural, allowing settlers to cultivate crops like hemp, corn, and wheat. Its fertile soil and access to the Missouri River contributed to the growth of the agriculture industry. The region was also widely known for its large slave population in the pre-Civil War era, with many plantations flourishing there.

In the later years, after the Civil War, the railroad became a defining factor in the county's economic development. The establishment of the Missouri Pacific Railroad (now known as Union Pacific Railroad) in the 1870s, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad (KATY) in the 1890s, allowed industries to expand and connect Saline County to other parts of the state and beyond.

Fun Fact: In 1873, George Washington Carver, the prominent African-American inventor and botanist, enrolled in the small college in Glasgow in Saline County, Missouri, becoming the first African-American student at the institution. After facing racial discrimination and encouraged by his schoolmates and teachers, he moved to Kansas. Carver eventually gained international recognition for his work in agricultural chemistry and his groundbreaking research on peanuts and other crops, which helped revolutionize agriculture in the South.
