Scotland County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Missouri. It was officially organized on January 29, 1841, and named in honor of Scotland, as many early settlers in the region were of Scottish descent. The county seat, Memphis, was founded in 1835 and named after Memphis, Tennessee, or Memphis, Egypt, due to the settlement's location on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi River.

Scotland County has been predominantly agricultural throughout its history, with farming communities focused on corn, soybeans, and livestock. The area also played a role in the Civil War, when skirmishes occurred within the county borders.

One fun fact about Scotland County is that during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the region gained recognition for its production of quality maple syrup with several commercial operations in the area. Today, the county offers a variety of recreational activities such as the Downing House Museum, Lake ShowMe, and the Memphis City Park for its residents and visitors to enjoy.
