Shelby County, located in the northeastern part of the great state of Missouri, was officially established on January 2, 1835. The county is named in honor of Isaac Shelby, a Revolutionary War hero and the first governor of Kentucky. The county seat is located in the city of Shelbyville.

The region was initially settled in the early 19th century, largely by pioneers of European descent who were attracted by the fertile farmland and abundant resources. The county's development was significantly influenced by agricultural activities, particularly as it relates to livestock farming and the production of corn and wheat.

The arrival of the railroad in the 1860s brought greater economic prosperity and population growth to the area. Over the years, Shelby County's population peaked in the late 19th century, with slight declines in the following years.

One fun fact about Shelby County is that it is home to the beautiful Bethel German Colony Historic District, a well-preserved collection of structures built by German immigrants in the mid-19th century. The settlement was founded in 1844 by Wilhelm Keil, a charismatic spiritual leader who led a group of followers seeking religious freedom and a promise of communal life.

Today, Shelby County is still largely steeped in agriculture, and visitors can appreciate its rich history and rural charm, including various historic sites, beautiful landscapes, and outdoor recreational opportunities.
