Sullivan County, Missouri

Sullivan County, located in the great state of Missouri, was officially organized on February 14, 1845. The county was named in honor of Major General John Sullivan, an officer in the American Revolutionary War. The earliest settlers in this region were mainly farmers, attracted by the fertile soil and abundant natural resources.
The county seat, Milan, was established in 1847 and is named after the Italian city of the same name. The growth of Sullivan County was strongly influenced by the construction of the Milan and St. Joseph Railroad, which was completed in 1857. This railroad helped to connect the county with other regions and facilitated the growth of various industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, and trade.
In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Sullivan County witnessed significant developments in infrastructure, such as the establishment of schools, post offices, banks, and hospitals. These advancements led to population growth and further economic development in the area.
A fun fact about Sullivan County is that it is home to the Locust Creek Covered Bridge State Historic Site, which houses one of the four remaining covered bridges in Missouri. This bridge, constructed in 1868, is over 150 feet long and once served as a vital transportation link for both people and goods in the region. Today, the bridge is preserved as a symbol of Sullivan County's rich history and heritage.
