Washington County, Missouri
.Washington County is located in the southeastern part of Missouri, USA. It was officially formed on August 21, 1813, and named in honor of the first President of the United States, George Washington. Previously, the area was part of the Upper Louisiana territory held by the French and then the Spanish before being acquired by the United States during the Louisiana Purchase in 1803.
The county is rich in history and played a significant role in the mining industry. The earliest European settlers in the region were French explorers and fur traders who arrived in the late 17th century. The rich mineral deposits in the region, particularly lead, brought significant growth and development to Washington County in the early 19th century. Potosi, the county seat, was established in 1785 and named after the Bolivian town with a similarly well-known mining heritage.
A fun fact about Washington County is that it was briefly at the center of the founding of the country's currency. Moses Austin, an American businessman and pioneer, constructed a smelter in Potosi in the late 18th century. He was granted a charter by the Spanish government to carry out lead mining operations. The lead from Washington County was used in creating bullets and other ammunition during the American Revolutionary War, helping secure America's independence. Additionally, the lead was also used to mint the first US coins in Philadelphia in 1792, connecting Washington County to the early financial history of the United States.
