- Gallatin is the county seat of Daviess County and was named after Albert Gallatin, who was the Secretary of the Treasury during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson.
- The first settlers arrived in the area around 1837, and the village was officially incorporated in 1868.
- One of the most significant events in Gallatin's history was the James-Younger Gang robbery of the Daviess County Savings and Loan Association on December 7, 1869. The gang made off with $60,000 in cash and securities, one of the largest bank robberies in American history at that time.
- Gallatin is known for its historic architecture, including several homes and buildings that date back to the mid-to-late 1800s. The Daviess County Courthouse, which was built in 1898 and features a unique Richardsonian Romanesque style, is particularly noteworthy.
- The town has a population of around 1,700 people and is home to a number of small businesses and local restaurants. It also hosts an annual Chautauqua festival, which celebrates the history and culture of the region.
