1. The Lewis and Clark Expedition began in St. Louis in 1804. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led a team of explorers to explore the newly acquired Louisiana Territory.
2. The Dred Scott case, a landmark Supreme Court decision in 1857 that upheld the legality of slavery, originated in St. Louis. Dred Scott was a slave who sued for his freedom but was denied on the basis that he was not a citizen.
3. The Gateway Arch, St. Louis' iconic symbol, was completed in 1965. It stands at 630 feet and is the tallest arch in the world.
4. St. Louis hosted the 1904 World's Fair, which attracted visitors from around the world and featured numerous technological and cultural innovations.
5. St. Louis was a major hub for the fur trade in the 19th century, with traders and trappers setting off from the city to explore the western territories.
