Craig grew up in the shadows of the Bitterroot Mountains fishing the mountain lakes of the Bitterroot Selway Wilderness, skiing the snow covered slopes in the winter and enjoying Flathead Lake in the summer months. After receiving his bachelor's degree in geological oceanography from Duke University, Craig began his professional career as a geophysicist with Texaco in their offshore division. In 1984 Craig returned to Montana to take over the family insurance and real estate interests. For the past 35 years Craig has been involved in real estate, insurance, construction, development as well as oil and gas ventures in Arizona, Louisiana, North Dakota and Montana.
