Judith Basin County, located in the great state of Montana, was officially established on December 10, 1920. It is situated in central Montana and covers an area of 1,870 square miles. The county was named after the Judith River that flows through the region, which in turn was named by explorer William Clark (of the Lewis and Clark Expedition) in honor of his sweetheart, Julia "Judith" Hancock.

The area was originally inhabited by Native Americans, primarily the Blackfeet, Assiniboine, and Gros Ventre tribes. In the late 1800s, settlers began arriving in the region, drawn by the promise of fertile farmland and the completion of the Montana Central Railway in 1887.

One significant aspect of Judith Basin County's history is its role in Montana's mining industry. Gold was discovered in the nearby Little Belt Mountains in the 1880s, leading to the establishment of the mining town of Yogo City. Although the gold rush in Yogo was short-lived, the area later became famous for its Yogo sapphires. In 1895, the Yogo Gulch was the site of the discovery of the largest and highest-quality deposit of sapphires in America, sparking a "sapphire rush" that lasted until the early 20th century.

Agriculture has also played a crucial role in the county's history, with wheat being the primary crop. Today, Judith Basin County is home to just over 2,000 residents who enjoy its beautiful landscapes, rich history, and outdoor recreational opportunities.

Fun fact: The Yogo sapphires found in this region are unique not just for their high quality but also for their distinct cornflower blue color, which is not heat-treated like most commercial sapphires. These exceptional gems were even incorporated into the British Crown Jewels and the engagement ring of Princess Diana.
