Liberty County is a small, rural county located in the great state of Montana. It was created on February 11, 1920, from parts of Chouteau and Hill Counties. The county gets its name from the patriotic sentiment of "liberty" held by the residents during the time it was established.
Situated near the Canadian border, Liberty County covers an area of approximately 1,458 square miles. The county seat is Chester, a small town with a population of around 1,000 residents. Agriculture is the primary industry in the region, with wheat and barley being the most significant crops.
One interesting piece of history is that the area was once part of the Louisiana Purchase bought by the United States from France in 1803. Later on, the region witnessed the exploration of Lewis and Clark Expedition, which passed through Montana between 1804-1806.
A fun fact about Liberty County is that it is home to the Tiber Dam, which is an earth-filled dam constructed in the 1950s by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation. The dam impounds the Marias River, creating Lake Elwell, a popular recreation area for fishing, boating, and camping, drawing visitors from across Montana and beyond.
