Powder River County, located in the southeastern part of the great state of Montana, was established on March 17, 1919, after being separated from Custer County. The county was named after the Powder River, which runs through the area and played a significant role in its history, particularly in the development of the cattle and sheep industries.

The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Cheyenne, Sioux, and Crow. Euro-American settlement began in the latter half of the 19th century, with the arrival of cattle ranchers, farmers, and miners. The Northern Pacific Railway's 1881 expansion facilitated increased growth and development in the region.

One of the most notable historic events in the area was the 1876 Battle of Powder River, one of the significant battles in the Great Sioux War. During this conflict, the US Army clashed with the Sioux and Cheyenne tribes, ultimately leading to the historic Battle of the Little Bighorn.

A fun fact about Powder River County is that it contains the highest point in southeastern Montana, Big Pryor Mountain, which reaches an elevation of 8,786 feet (2,678 meters). This peak offers panoramic views of the surrounding region, attracting hikers and tourists to its scenic beauty.
