Anaconda, Montana is a small city located in southwestern Montana, with a population of approximately 9,000 people. It was founded in 1883 as a copper smelting town and was once home to the world's largest smokestack. Anaconda was also the site of one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history, when toxic waste from the copper smelting process contaminated the land and waterways in the surrounding area.
