Wilkes County, located in the great state of North Carolina, was established on April 15, 1777, when it was carved out of the now-extinct Surry County and Washington District. The county is named in honor of John Wilkes, a British politician who actively advocated for the American colonies' grievances prior to the Revolutionary War. Spreading over 757 square miles, Wilkes County is situated in the Blue Ridge foothills of the stunning Appalachian Mountains, giving the region spectacular landscapes and scenic beauty.

Throughout its history, Wilkes County played a critical role in the American Revolutionary War, with several significant battles fought within its borders, including the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. Over time, the population grew, and the county evolved as an important agricultural, industrial, and manufacturing hub in the region.

One fun fact about Wilkes County is that it is famous for moonshining and has long been known as the "Moonshine Capital of the World." In the early 20th century, when local distillers produced illegal moonshine in hidden stills throughout the county, this underground economy was a major contributor to the county's overall financial health. Moonshining also helped lay the groundwork for the birth of stock car racing, as drivers modified their cars to outrun law enforcement while transporting the illegal liquor. This led to the formation of the wildly popular motorsport of NASCAR, with North Wilkesboro Speedway being one of the original tracks on the NASCAR circuit.
