One quiet interesting fact about important historical events near High Point, North Carolina is that the city played a small but significant role during the Civil War. In 1865, Union General George Stoneman led a raid through North Carolina with the goal of destroying Confederate supply lines and manufacturing centers. High Point, which was a major producer of weapons and supplies for the Confederate Army, was one of the targets of this raid.
Stoneman's troops arrived in High Point on April 11, 1865, and quickly overpowered the Confederate defenders. The Union soldiers then set fire to the city's factories, warehouses, and railroad station, destroying millions of dollars worth of Confederate supplies.
