The Official North Dakota State Insect
North Dakota State Bug
Lady Bug

The Lady Bug, scientifically known as Coccinella novemnotata, is the state bug of North Dakota. It was designated as the state bug in 1988, after a student from Central High School in Grand Forks, North Dakota proposed the idea. Lady Bugs are small, oval-shaped insects with red and black spotted wings. They feed on aphids, which are pests that damage crops. Lady Bugs are beneficial to gardens and farms as they help to control the aphid population without the use of pesticides. Lady Bugs can also be found in many different habitats including meadows, gardens, and woodlands. The Lady Bug is a popular symbol of good luck and it is believed that if a Lady Bug lands on you, you should make a wish. Lady Bugs have been popular in North Dakota for many years and are considered a symbol of good luck and prosperity.
