The Official North Dakota State Quarters

North Dakota State Motto: Liberty and union, now and forever, one and inseparable
Strength from the soil

Front of the US quarter dollar coin   North Dakota State Quarter

The North Dakota state quarter was designed by Joseph Menna and was issued in 2006. It depicts the state animal, the American bison, standing in front of a sunrise with a view of the Missouri River in the background. The inscriptions on the quarter are "North Dakota" and "1889," to commemorate the year that the state entered the Union. The various symbols and meanings behind the design of the quarter include:

- The American bison, representing the state's Native American heritage, agriculture and wildlife.
- The sunrise, symbolizing the new beginning of North Dakota statehood.
- The Missouri River, representing the importance of waterways to the state's development.
- The state motto, "Liberty and Union, Now and Forever, One and Inseparable", is inscribed on the edge of the coin.

The second North Dakota State Quarter

The North Dakota National Park quarter from the America the Beautiful Quarters Program was first released in 2021. The coin features a scene of the historic Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, located just north of the Montana-North Dakota border. The design includes a view of the post's two-story stone building and two tipis, honoring the cultural exchange between Native Americans and settlers that took place at the post in the 19th century. The coin also features two bison facing each other, representing the wildlife of the area. The inscriptions "North Dakota" and "Fort Union" appear around the image. The reverse of the coin includes the familiar John Flanagan portrait of George Washington, the inscription "United States of America," and the motto "In God We Trust."

The America the Beautiful Quarters Program was authorized by Congress in 2008 to honor 56 national parks and other national sites in each of the 50 United States. The coins are a symbol of the nation's history and natural beauty, and commemorate the important places and people that have shaped America's story. The North Dakota National Park quarter is the 34th in the program, and the first to feature a national historic site in the state.
