Fillmore County is located in the southeastern part of Nebraska and was officially established on March 15, 1855. Named after the 13th US President, Millard Fillmore, the county is rich in history, agricultural achievements, and natural beauty. With its county seat in Geneva, the region features a blend of rural and urban communities.
In the 1860s, this region witnessed large-scale settlement due to the Homestead Act, which provided free land to pioneers willing to develop it. The county population boomed, and several towns flourished, including Exeter, Fairmont, and Strang. Fillmore County became known for its agriculture, specifically corn production, livestock, and dairy farming.
A significant event in the county's history occurred in 1871 during the grasshopper invasion. The swarms of grasshoppers devastated crops, causing severe damage and temporary economic setbacks. Nonetheless, the county proved resilient, and agriculture continued to thrive, leading to the establishment of local grain elevators and a prosperous farming industry.
Fun Fact: Fillmore County was mapped and planned by a Peruvian emigre, Feliciano Alfaro Montenegro, who received the land in 1862 from Governor Alvin Saunders. Montenegro donated part of his land to the county, including the land where the courthouse now stands in Geneva.
