Hamilton County is a county located in the southern part of the state of Nebraska in the United States. The county was founded in 1867 and officially organized in 1870, and it was named to honor Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.
Stretching over 540 square miles, Hamilton County initially experienced growth due to the rise of the railroad industry in the late 19th century. The Burlington & Missouri River Railroad played a significant role in attracting settlers and increasing agricultural production, which still continues as the backbone of the county's economy. The main crops produced are corn, soybeans, and wheat, and livestock also contributes heavily to its agricultural profile.
Europa, a small unincorporated community in the county, is an interesting historical site. It was settled in the 1870s by a group of immigrants from Europe, predominantly the Danes. The community thrived in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and although it eventually dissolved, it serves as a reminder of the diverse origins of the settlers who contributed to the development of the county. Several of the original buildings, including a Danish Evangelical Lutheran Church, still remain.
Fun fact: Hamilton County is home to the Edgerton Explorit Center, a hands-on science center located in Aurora, the county seat. This center is named after Harold "Doc" Edgerton, a noted inventor, and MIT professor who was born in Aurora in 1903. Among his many contributions to science and technology, Doc Edgerton is best known for perfecting the electronic stroboscope, which is also known as strobe light, and revolutionizing high-speed photography.
