Scotts Bluff County, located in the western region of the great state of Nebraska, was established on January 31, 1888. Named after the prominent and historically significant Scotts Bluff geological structure, the county lies within the region known as the Nebraska Panhandle. Scotts Bluff provided both protection and guidance to Native Americans and pioneer travelers in earlier times.

The city of Gering, one of the earliest settlements in the county, was founded in 1887, and currently serves as the county seat. The region's growth was facilitated by the arrival of the Burlington and Missouri River Railroad in 1900, which connected the area to major urban centers and consequently attracted settlers from across the United States.

The Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails, used by pioneers in the 19th century during westward expansion, all passed through the area. Scotts Bluff National Monument, established in 1919, preserves and highlights the significance of this geological feature and its role in the region's history.

One fun fact about Scotts Bluff County is that the Robidoux Pass, a trail that played a crucial part in American westward expansion, is located within the county. During the mid-1800s, this pass served as a significant trading post and emigrant stopping point, operated by French-Canadian fur trader, Joseph Robidoux.
