Sullivan County, named after Revolutionary War hero General John Sullivan, is located in the great state of New Hampshire. The county was established on July 5, 1827, and its boundaries were determined by the legislature in 1828. Its county seat is Newport, a city known for its rich history and picturesque downtown area.

Sullivan County lies along the western border of New Hampshire, adjacent to the state of Vermont. It spans a total area of approximately 552 square miles, with a population of over 40,000 residents.

Historically, Sullivan County was primarily an agricultural region, with early European settlers practicing subsistence farming. This began to change in the 19th century with the arrival of various industries such as textile mills, railroads, and manufacturing hubs. As these industries grew, the population increased, creating a more diverse economy and shaping the area into the thriving region it is today. Ironically, despite this industrial growth, the county is still well-known for its picturesque rural landscapes.

One fun fact about Sullivan County is that it is home to the Cornish-Windsor covered bridge, the longest two-span covered bridge in the world! It connects the towns of Cornish, NH, and Windsor, VT, and spans across the Connecticut River. The bridge was built in 1866, with a total length of 449 feet, 5 inches a unique and important historical landmark that attests to the engineering skills of the 19th century.
