Atlantic County, New Jersey
.Atlantic County is located in southeastern New Jersey and is part of the Atlantic City-Hammonton Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was established on February 7, 1837, and was given its current name due to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The county was formed from portions of Gloucester County, and it encompasses an area of 671 square miles, making it the 15th largest county in the state.
The region was originally inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape Native American tribe, and first European settlers arrived in the 17th century. Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the economy of Atlantic County was primarily based on agriculture, which included raising crops like corn and cranberries, as well as livestock.
However, the development of the county took a significant turn in the late 19th century with the construction of the Atlantic City Boardwalk, which opened in 1870. This helped transform Atlantic City into a popular tourist destination and spurred the growth and development of the surrounding region. The boardwalk, which was initially built to keep sand out of hotel lobbies, eventually evolved into one of the most iconic attractions on the East Coast, featuring numerous shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Fun Fact: Lucy the Elephant, a 65-foot tall wooden elephant structure built in 1881, is located in Margate City of Atlantic County, NJ. This unique structure has served various purposes, including being used as a hotel, real estate office, and today as a historic museum. Lucy the Elephant is recognized as the oldest surviving roadside attraction in the United States.
