Grant County, New Mexico
.Grant County is located in the southwestern part of the state of New Mexico and was founded on January 30, 1868. It is named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, who served as the 18th President of the United States and played a crucial role in the Civil War. The county has a rich history dating back to prehistoric times, with evidence of ancient Native American settlements.
During the Mexican-American War in the 1840s, the region became part of the United States, following the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1849, the US Army established Fort Bayard to protect settlements in the region from Apache attacks. Fort Bayard played a significant role in the Indian Wars, serving as a base for military operations against Apache leader Geronimo.
Grant County saw a surge of silver mining in the 1870s and 1880s, leading to the growth and development of the region. The towns of Silver City and Pinos Altos were founded during this time, with Silver City being the county seat. Ranching and agriculture also became important elements of the local economy.
Today, Grant County is known for its scenic beauty, rich cultural heritage, and outdoor recreational opportunities. The Gila Wilderness, established in 1924 as the first designated wilderness area in the United States, is located within the county and offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing.
