Lincoln County, located in the great state of New Mexico, has a rich and captivating history. Established on January 16, 1869, the county was named in honor of President Abraham Lincoln. Situated in the southeastern part of the state, Lincoln County originally covered a vast area but was later subdivided to create several other counties. Today, the county spans an area of about 4,831 square miles.

In the late 19th century, Lincoln County gained prominence due to the infamous Lincoln County War, a violent conflict between rival factions that took place from 1878 to 1881. The war involved prominent historical figures such as Billy the Kid and Sheriff Pat Garrett. Billy the Kid, one of the most legendary outlaws in American history, became intimately linked to the region due to his involvement in the Lincoln County War.

Ruidoso, a popular tourist destination, is one of the largest towns in Lincoln County. Known for its stunning natural beauty and outdoor recreational activities, Ruidoso offers attractions like Ski Apache, a major ski resort owned by the Mescalero Apache Tribe, as well as the Ruidoso Downs horse racing track, which hosts the annual All American Futurity, one of the richest horse races in the world.

A fun fact about Lincoln County is related to its connection with the famous Smokey Bear. In 1950, firefighters found a small bear cub trapped in a tree during the massive Capitan Gap Fire in the Lincoln National Forest. The cub was rescued, nursed back to health, and eventually became the inspiration for the national symbol of wildfire prevention, Smokey Bear. The Smokey Bear Historical Park in Capitan, New Mexico, offers visitors the chance to learn more about this iconic figure and its local origins.
