Roosevelt County is located in the southeastern region of the great state of New Mexico. It was created on February 28, 1903, from the eastern part of Chaves County and named in honor of the 26th President of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, who was also an avid conservationist. The county seat is the city of Portales, which serves as the economic and political hub of the region.

The region has a rich history, with evidence of Native American occupation dating back thousands of years, including the Clovis culture dating back to around 9000 BCE. Spanish explorers arrived in the area during the 16th century, and eventually, it became part of Mexico following the Mexican War of Independence in 1821. After the Mexican-American War in 1848, the region became part of the United States through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

Roosevelt County's economy was predominantly based on agriculture, especially during the early 20th century. Important crops included wheat, corn, and peanuts, as well as cattle and dairy farming. Today, agriculture continues to be a significant economic driver, along with education, healthcare, and wind energy production.

A fun fact about Roosevelt County and its surrounding region is its rich archaeological history. Blackwater Draw, located to the north of Portales, is a famous archaeological site recognized for its significant findings of the Clovis culture. This site has provided valuable insights into the lives of some of the earliest inhabitants of North America and has been critical in our understanding of early human migration patterns and hunting techniques.
