San Miguel County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of New Mexico, USA. Established in 1852, it is one of the oldest counties in New Mexico and holds a rich history that dates back even further to Native American tribes and Spanish explorers. The county was named after the town of San Miguel del Bado, which had been established in 1794 along the Pecos River and was an important center for sheep and cattle raising at that time.

In the 19th century, the Santa Fe Trail brought traders and settlers to the area, further contributing to its development. The county seat, Las Vegas, was founded in 1835 and became a prominent stop along the trail, leading to the establishment of several key forts, including Fort Union, a major 19th-century frontier military post.

The arrival of the railroad in 1879 led to considerable growth in the region, with Las Vegas becoming the largest city in New Mexico at that time. Rich in culture and tradition, the area has a strong Hispanic influence, which is still evident in its architecture and local customs.

A fun fact about San Miguel County is that the Montezuma Castle, located just outside of Las Vegas, was an extravagant hotel built in the 1880s by the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway Company to promote tourism in the area, and now it serves as the prestigious United World College-USA, an international boarding school.
