Spring Valley is an unincorporated community located west of the city of Las Vegas. It was named after the natural springs in the area, which were an important water source for early settlers.
One historical anecdote of Spring Valley is that the area was once home to a large ranch owned by Howard Hughes, the famous American aviator, entrepreneur, and film producer. In the 1950s, Hughes purchased over 25,000 acres of land in the Spring Valley area and used it as his personal retreat. He also built a private airstrip and hangar on the property, which allowed him to come and go as he pleased.
One interesting story related to Hughes and the Spring Valley ranch is that he kept a group of chimpanzees on the property as part of his personal menagerie. It was said that Hughes used to enjoy riding around the ranch on a motorcycle, with a chimp sitting on the handlebars. Eventually, Hughes sold off much of the land and the property changed hands several times before being purchased by a developer who turned it into a golf course community. Today, there are only a few remnants of Hughes' former ranch still visible in the area.
