Vivid Dancer Damselfly

The vivid dancer damselfly (Argia vivida) is an insect that resides in the western United States, including Nevada. This species of damselfly was designated as the state insect of Nevada in 2013, after it was nominated by a 4th grade class in Las Vegas. Vivid dancer damselflies are typically found near rivers, streams, and marshes, where they lay eggs in the water. Adults feed on other small insects, while larvae feed on aquatic invertebrates. These damselflies are usually black or brown in color and feature an iridescent blue and green sheen on the outside of their wings. Females are larger than males and have a more brilliant coloration. The vivid dancer damselfly is one of the most common species of damselfly in the western United States, making it a great choice for Nevada's state insect.
