One interesting fact about Syracuse, New York is that it was the birthplace of the famous financier and industrialist, John D. Rockefeller. Additionally, Syracuse played a significant role in the Underground Railroad, which helped escaped slaves find freedom in the North before the Civil War. The city was known for its many safe houses for runaway slaves, and a famous abolitionist, Jermain Wesley Loguen, lived in Syracuse and helped hundreds of slaves escape bondage. Another historical event that took place in Syracuse was the discovery of the first effective flu vaccine by Dr. Jonas Salk in 1947.
