The Official New York State Quarters

New York State Motto: Excelsior
Ever Upward!

Front of the US quarter dollar coin   New York State Quarter

The New York state quarter was created in 2001 and was the eleventh quarter issued in the U.S. Mint's 50 State Quarters Program. The design on the quarter was created by Alfred Maletsky and features an image of the Statue of Liberty with the inscription "Gateway to Freedom" on the reverse side of the coin. Symbols on the coin include: a torch, representing enlightenment and liberty; a sunburst, symbolizing the New York skyline; an eagle, replicating the state's coat of arms; and the state motto, "Excelsior." The design is intended to represent the gateway to freedom for immigrants who have arrived in New York over the centuries.

The second New York State Quarter

The New York National Park quarter is part of the America the Beautiful Quarters Program, which was launched by the United States Mint in 2010 to honor 56 national parks and other sites of national interest. Each quarter in the series features a design on the reverse, or tails, side of the coin that depicts the unique history and character of each of the sites honored.

The New York National Park quarter features an image of the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and democracy, on the obverse. The reverse of this quarter features a design depicting the Fort Stanwix National Monument of Rome, NY. The design shows a view of the fort's fortifications with its blockhouse and two flags flying. The flags represent the nations that fought for the fort during the Revolutionary War, the United States and the Confederacy of the Six Nations. The inscription "FORT STANWIX" is above the image, and the inscriptions "NEW YORK" and "2020" are to the left and right of the image.

The Statue of Liberty and the Fort Stanwix Monument are both iconic symbols of the United States and of New York state in particular. The Statue of Liberty has come to represent freedom and opportunity, while Fort Stanwix stands as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices of the Revolutionary War. Together, they represent the history and character of the state of New York and the United States as a whole.
