One fun fact about Altona, New York is that it was once home to the Altona Flat Rock, a naturally occurring geographic formation that was an important landmark for travelers during the 19th century. The flat rock was said to be over 150 feet wide and was a popular destination for picnics and sightseeing. However, the rock was destroyed during the construction of Interstate 87 in the mid-20th century. Today, a historical marker stands in its place to mark its significance.
