Palenville is a small village located in Greene County, New York. Here are some interesting facts about Palenville:
1. Palenville is known as the "Entrance to the Catskills" and is located near the Kaaterskill Falls, one of the highest waterfalls in the state.
2. It was the home of the Hudson River School painter, Thomas Cole, who created some of his most famous paintings in the area.
3. During the 19th century, Palenville was a popular vacation spot for wealthy New Yorkers.
4. The 650-acre plot of land that comprises the Mawignack Preserve was donated to the Nature Conservancy by local resident and actress, Meryl Streep, in 2018.
5. The Palenville Fire Department is one of the oldest volunteer fire departments in the United States, having been formed in 1901.
6. One of Palenville's most unique features is the "Rip Van Winkle Bridge," which spans the Hudson River and connects Greene and Columbia Counties. It was named after the famous story by Washington Irving.
7. The Catskill Mountain House hotel was built in Palenville in 1824 and was a popular destination for well-to-do New Yorkers until it burned down in 1963.
