Jack and Master
I bring to my professional life as a REALTOR an unusually strong and diverse set of life experiences and skills. I'm a skilled communicator--chalk that up to my previous life as a published writer and an English professor at Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. I'm an experienced negotiator, both as a REALTOR, a small business owner, and as a professional business counselor and consultant. I also have extensive building and remodeling experience, and I stay abreast of both new and existing construction methods, materials and technologies. I can also drive like a taxi cab driver when the situation calls for it--since I was one in the Washington D.C. area back in the early 80's.
The Road Less Traveled
I came to Athens as an academic, but I stayed for the lifestyle and land. My wife Mary and I had always dreamed of owning an old farmhouse in the country, and by the early 90's we found ourselves on a picturesque 80-acre farm, raising all manner of living creatures, including some 60 head of specialty wool sheep breeds. One thing led to another--as it does--and Mary and I opened a yarn and supply shop where we sold looms, spinning wheels, natural fibers and the like. In 1999, we sold the retail store so that we could concentrate on developing a new business, FeltWorks Studio. FeltWorks eventually went on to become a nationally-recognized craft studio, and our unique line of contemporary felted art has been carried by over 200 fine galleries and museum shops around the country.
The Calling
At a continuing education class a couple of years ago, attendees were asked by the instructor to stand and introduce themselves briefly, touching on how they became involved in real estate. Over 40 people were in the class, and the process took awhile. I was seated towards the back of the room, and when my turn came, I stood, gave my name, and told the class the I had longed to become a real estate agent since I was 3 years old. People were bored, but that got their attention. Forty-some real estate agents turned in their seats to take a good look at someone whose life ambition was to sell real estate. I let the gravity of it settle over the room like a lead blanket. I let a few seconds pass, then waved my hand and said, "Awww, I'm just joshin'! I didn't stumble into this until my 40's." Everyone laughed and turned back around in their seats, satisfied that nobody would "dream of becoming a realtor." So it's true--I confess: I never dreamed of becoming a realtor. But boy am I glad that I discovered it as a profession, for no other work that I have done in my life has provided me with as much stimulation and gratification as this career has.
Straight Shooter, Midnight Oil
