Athens County is a county located in the southeastern part of Ohio. It was named after Athens, Greece, and was the first county in the United States to be named after a city in Greece.
Athens County was officially established in 1805, when Ohio was still a territory. The county has a rich history that is closely tied to the history of Ohio University, which was founded in Athens in 1804 and is the oldest university in the state. Over the years, the county has developed into a major center for education, arts and culture, and outdoor recreation.
One not so fun fact about Athens County is that it is home to the Athens Asylum, also known as The Ridges. The asylum was originally opened in 1874 as the Athens Lunatic Asylum, and over the years it served as a hospital for the mentally ill, a tuberculosis ward, and a nursing home. Today, the asylum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is home to the Kennedy Museum of Art, as well as several other university offices and departments. The asylum is known for its distinctive Victorian architecture and its fascinating history, and is a popular destination for visitors to the region.
