Morgan County is a picturesque region located in the Appalachian foothills in the southeastern part of Ohio. Established on December 29, 1817, the county was named in honor of General Daniel Morgan, a distinguished military figure known for his contribution during the American Revolutionary War.

The area was originally inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Delaware, Shawnee, and Mingo. As Europeans began to settle in Ohio in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the Native American tribes were gradually displaced. In 1819, Malta was founded as the first settlement in Morgan County, followed by McConnelsville in 1836, which eventually became the county seat.

The county encompasses 422 square miles of land, with the Muskingum River meandering through it, providing a vital transportation and trade route during the early years of development. Agriculture and coal mining became major industries in the region, which fostered economic growth and contributed to the increase in population.

One interesting fact about Morgan County is that it's home to the "Big Muskie," which was once the world's largest earth-moving machine. In operation from 1969 to 1991, the enormous machine was used to move millions of cubic yards of earth for coal mining. Today, it's preserved as part of an outdoor museum called Miners' Memorial Park, showcasing the industrial history of the region.
