Portage County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Ohio. Established on June 7, 1807, the county was named after the portage path used by Native Americans, which connected the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas rivers. The county spans a total area of approximately 507 square miles, and its current county seat is the city of Ravenna.

The area was initially inhabited by multiple indigenous tribes such as the Lenape (Delaware), Miami, Shawnee, and Iroquois. Later, it was settled by European pioneers, primarily from Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and New York. The Connecticut Land Company played a major role in settlement and development by founding several townships in the Connecticut Western Reserve, an area that included present-day Portage County.

Portage County played a significant role in the American Civil War, as it was home to several regiments connected to the Union army. The abolition movement was also strong here, and the county became a key stop on the Underground Railroad for runaway slaves seeking freedom in the 19th century.

Throughout the years, the county has maintained ties to its agricultural roots, with diverse industries, such as manufacturing and education, shaping the area's development as well.

As for a fun fact, Portage County is home to the Nelson-Kennedy Ledges State Park, which offers visitors a unique chance to explore scenic rock formations, sandstone ledges, cliffs, and waterfalls that date back millions of years. This geological wonder is popular for nature enthusiasts and offers various outdoor activities, including hiking and picnicking.
