Scioto County, located in the southern part of the great state of Ohio, was established on May 1, 1803. Named after the Scioto River, which derives its name from the Wyandot Indian term for "deer," the county holds a significant place in Ohio's history.

The county seat of Scioto is Portsmouth, which was first settled in 1796 by the American Revolutionary War's veterans. Throughout the 19th century, Portsmouth grew as an important center for trade, manufacturing, and transportation, with the Ohio and Erie Canal and the later development of railroads contributing significantly to its growth.

In the early 20th century, the county was a prominent player in the shoe manufacturing industry which formed a major part of the local economy. The region has been historically described by picturesque landscapes, rolling hills, and rich farmland.

One fun fact about Scioto County is that it is home to the famed "Portsmouth Earthworks," a prehistoric mound complex built by the Native American Hopewell culture between 100 BC and 400 AD. The site consists of several earthwork structures, including mounds, enclosures, and embankments, and is considered an archaeological gem in the region.
