The Official Ohio State Insect
Ohio State Bug
Lady Bug

The Lady Bug, or Coccinella septempunctata, is the official state insect of Ohio. This species of beetle is known for its small size, the red and black spotted pattern on its body, and its voracious appetite for agricultural pests. Lady Bugs have long been a beneficial insect, helping to keep garden pests in check. The Lady Bug was adopted as the official state insect of Ohio on April 8th, 1975 and has become a symbol of the state ever since. Interestingly, the Lady Bug is found all over the world and has been used as a symbol of good luck for centuries. The Lady Bug’s red and black coloration is thought to be a warning to predators, as the bright colors indicate that the insect is toxic to eat. Lady Bugs also have an impressive life-span of up to 2 to 3 years, with adults hibernating during the winter months. Lady Bugs are also known to communicate with each other by releasing pheromones to signal danger or to attract a mate.
