- Newark is the county seat of Licking County and its population was estimated to be around 50,000 in 2019.
- The city is home to the Newark Earthworks, which are a series of ancient Native American mounds and earthworks that were built by the Hopewell culture over 2,000 years ago.
- Newark is also known for having a "Licking River" that runs through it. The river is named for the salt licks that attracted wildlife to the area, and it was an important resource for the Native American tribes who lived there.
- In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Newark was a major center for the manufacturing of glassware, and several glass companies were headquartered there, including the famous Heisey Glass Company. Today, some of the old factory buildings have been repurposed as museums and cultural centers.
