Adair County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Oklahoma, within the United States of America. The county was created in 1906 from the larger Cherokee District in the Indian Territory, and it was named after William Penn Adair, a renowned Cherokee advocate and statesman. The county seat is located in the city of Stilwell.
Historically, Adair County was part of the Cherokee Nation, which resided in the area following the forced relocation of Native American tribes from southeastern parts of the United States during the Indian Removal Act of 1830, resulting in the "Trail of Tears."
A mix of Cherokee, European, and African Americans resided in Adair County during the 19th and 20th centuries. The county's economy was initially supported by agriculture, especially the production of apples and other fruits, and then evolved to include the lumber, oil, and gas industries.
A fun fact about Adair County is that it is home to Natural Falls State Park, which features a beautiful 77-foot waterfall, making it the second tallest in Oklahoma. The park also offers hiking trails, picnic areas, and an observation platform to enjoy the scenic views.
