Beckham County is located in the southwestern part of Oklahoma and was created upon Oklahoma's statehood on November 16, 1907. The county was named in honor of J.C.W. Beckham, who served as a Democratic governor of Kentucky and a member of the United States Senate.

Before statehood, the area that would become Beckham County was part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation, which was opened to non-Indian settlement in April 1892 during the Cheyenne-Arapaho land opening. The opening was conducted via a land run, in which settlers raced to claim parcels of land.

Elk City, the largest city in Beckham County, was founded during the land run on April 21, 1892. Sayre, the county seat, was established in 1901 and named after Robert H. Sayre, an executive with the Choctaw, Oklahoma and Gulf Railroad.

The agricultural sector played a significant role in Beckham County's early economy, with crops like cotton and wheat serving as the primary agricultural products. Later on, the discovery of oil and natural gas in the 1920s led to an economic boom that resulted in significant development and urban growth.

Fun Fact: Beckham County is home to the National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, which showcases the history of the iconic highway that runs from Chicago to Los Angeles. This museum is part of the Old Town Museum Complex which features multiple museums and even a renovated 1905 Opera House.
