Carter County is located in the southern part of Oklahoma, USA. The county was officially established at statehood, on November 16, 1907, but its history goes back further. The area that is now Carter County was originally part of the Chickasaw Nation-one of the Five Civilized Tribes that were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory during the 1830s as part of the Trail of Tears.

The city of Ardmore, which is now the county seat and the largest city in Carter County, was founded in 1887. Ardmore was a thriving trade and commercial center due to the arrival of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe Railway in the area. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the county became known for its cattle raising, cotton production, and shipping facilities.

Carter County and the surrounding areas experienced an oil boom in the early 1900s, which significantly contributed to the region's economy and increased its population. The presence of the petroleum industry is still crucial to the county's economy.

One fun fact about Carter County is that it is home to Lake Murray, Oklahoma's first and largest state park. Lake Murray State Park spans over 12,500 acres and offers numerous recreational activities such as camping, hiking, boating, fishing, and golfing. The park also features a rare and unique geological formation called Tucker Tower, which is a 65-feet-tall limestone structure that juts out from a cliff into Lake Murray, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
