Comanche County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Oklahoma, and it was founded in 1901 following the opening of the Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation for settlement. The county seat is Lawton and it covers approximately 1,084 square miles.
Before the settlement of the area, it was inhabited by the Comanche, Kiowa, and Apache tribes who relied on the buffalo-rich plains for survival. European contact with these tribes began when Spanish explorer Francisco Coronado traversed the region in 1541. After numerous territorial changes, the land was incorporated into the United States through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. Over the course of the 19th-century, the indigenous tribes faced displacement as a result of US westward expansion and military campaigns.
The Kiowa, Comanche, and Apache Reservation was established in 1867, and the area was primarily a Grassland Reserve. The reservation was eventually opened for settlement by non-Native Americans in 1901 through a lottery system, where registered applicants had a chance to win a parcel of land.
Following the founding of Comanche County, the region experienced an economic surge due to agriculture, livestock, and the discovery of oil. By the 1920s and 1930s, the area had a thriving agricultural industry, predominantly wheat, cotton, and cattle farming.
A fun fact about Comanche County is that the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, established in 1901, is the oldest managed wildlife facility in the United States. It houses a diverse range of wildlife, including bison, Texas longhorn cattle, and elk, and covers over 59,000 acres of land. With its picturesque landscapes and abundant outdoor recreational opportunities, it continues to attract visitors from all over the country.
