Haskell County, located in southeastern Oklahoma, has a rich history that traces back to the early 19th century. The area that would become Haskell County was initially inhabited by native tribes such as the Choctaw and Cherokee. Following the Indian Removal Act of 1830, these tribes were forcibly relocated to Indian Territory, which later became the state of Oklahoma.

The county itself was established on July 16, 1907, two months before Oklahoma became a state. It was named in honor of Charles N. Haskell, who played a significant role in drafting the Oklahoma Constitution and subsequently became the state's first governor.

Haskell County's economy has been primarily driven by agriculture, with major crops including cotton, corn, and soybeans. Timber production was also significant in the early 20th century. Additionally, with numerous rivers and lakes in the area, the county has enjoyed a thriving recreational industry, particularly in fishing and boating.

A fun fact about Haskell County is that it is home to the stunning Kerr Lake (also known as the Robert S. Kerr Reservoir), which is a human-made reservoir located on the Arkansas River. The lake was created by the construction of the Robert S. Kerr Lock and Dam in the early 1960s and has become a popular destination for fishing, boating, and camping enthusiasts. This reservoir was named in honor of Robert S. Kerr, a former Oklahoma governor and U.S. Senator, who was known for his contributions to the state's water resource development programs.
