Kingfisher County, Oklahoma
.Kingfisher County is located in the central part of the great state of Oklahoma. Established at the time of Oklahoma's statehood in 1907, the county was named after the community of Kingfisher, which was the temporary end of the Chisholm Trail, a historic cattle trail that ran from Texas to Kansas. Kingfisher, the county seat, was named in honor of David Kingfisher, a respected Native American chief.
Before statehood, the area now known as Kingfisher County was part of the Cheyenne-Arapaho Reservation, established by the federal government for Native American peoples in the late 19th century. In 1889, the US Government opened the Unassigned Lands of Oklahoma for settlement through land runs, marking the beginning of the Great Oklahoma Land Run. At noon on April 22, 1889, thousands of settlers rushed to claim land, including what is now Kingfisher County.
The economy of Kingfisher County has historically relied on agriculture, particularly wheat production. The region's fertile soil, typically found in the Red Bed Plains, has contributed to its agricultural abundance. Additionally, oil and natural gas production play a significant role in the county's economy.
Fun Fact: Kingfisher County is home to the grave of Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart. He was born in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, on March 29, 1918, before his family moved to Missouri, where he later opened the first official Walmart store.
