Kiowa County is located in southwestern Oklahoma and is part of the Great Plains region of the United States. It was named after the Kiowa Native American tribe that historically inhabited the area. Established on August 6th, 1901, the county was formed as a result of the Land Run of 1901, when settlers were allowed to claim land on a first-come, first-served basis. Hobart, the county seat, was also founded in 1901 and named after then Vice President of the United States, Garrett Hobart.

Before European settlers arrived in the area, tribes such as the Apache, Comanche, and Kiowa lived on these lands. As European settlers expanded westward, the tribes were forced to cede their lands and were relocated to reservations. In 1892, the Jerome Agreement officially opened up the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache Reservation for settlement.

Agriculture, ranching, and natural resources have driven Kiowa County's economy since its foundation. Cotton farming was particularly abundant during the early years, with the county even becoming known as the "Cotton Capital of the World" in the 1920s.

One fun fact about Kiowa County is its association with the infamous outlaw Belle Starr. Her daughter, Pearl Starr, opened a popular business in the town of Saddle Mountain, Kiowa County, which hosted gatherings and provided entertainment for local patrons in the early 1900s.
