Major County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Oklahoma. It was officially established on July 5, 1907, at the time of Oklahoma's statehood. The county originally consisted of 709 square miles of land area and 10 square miles of water area, with its county seat located in Fairview.
The history of Major County dates back to the late 1800s when it was inhabited by various Native American tribes, predominantly the Cheyenne and Arapaho. The Organic Act of 1890 led to the settlement of the region by white settlers, who were mostly farmers and ranchers. The Cherokee Outlet land was opened for settlement in 1893, which is when Major County started to see more growth and development.
The county is named in honor of John Charles Major, an early resident of nearby Woods County and a participant in the run of 1893. It is said that he was instrumental in the founding of the town of Fairview and the establishment of the area that became Major County.
One fun fact about Major County is that it is home to the Gloss Mountain State Park, also known as the Glass Mountains. The park is located along US-412 and features unique and colorful Selenite gypsum formations that sparkle under sunlight, giving the appearance of glass, hence the name "Glass Mountains."
