The Official Oklahoma State Insect
Oklahoma State Bug
Honey Bee

The Oklahoma state insect is the honey bee, or Apis mellifera. This species of bee is native to the state and is an important pollinator for the many agricultural crops grown in Oklahoma. Honey bees are also important for producing honey, which is used in a variety of products. Honey bees are social insects, living in large colonies organized into three distinct castes: the queen, the workers, and the drones. The queen is responsible for laying eggs, while the workers and drones are responsible for collecting nectar and pollen, building and defending the hive, and producing honey.

The honey bee was officially designated as the Oklahoma state insect in 1992, thanks to a campaign led by elementary school students from across the state. The students wrote letters to the Oklahoma legislature, advocating for the honey bee to become the official state insect. As a result of their efforts, the bill was signed into law, making the honey bee the official state insect of Oklahoma.
