Yamhill County is located in the northwestern region of the great state of Oregon, covering an area of approximately 718 square miles. Established on July 5, 1843, Yamhill County was one of the original four districts created by the Provisional Government of Oregon. The county is named after the Yamhill River, with the origin of the word 'Yamhill' being traced to the indigenous Kalapuyan-speaking Yamhill tribe.
The area was first inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kalapuya and the Atfalati. As part of the Oregon Trail, Yamhill County witnessed an influx of pioneers and settlers, predominantly from Midwestern states, during the mid-19th century. The establishment of early towns, including Yamhill, Lafayette, and McMinnville, coincides with this period.
Yamhill County is known for its rich agricultural history, with wheat and livestock farming dominating its early years. The county later expanded its agricultural sector to include fruit orchards, nut farms, and vineyards. In the late 20th century, the area experienced significant growth in the wine industry, with the Willamette Valley becoming a significant viticultural region. Today, the county boasts over 200 wineries and is internationally renowned for its Pinot Noir.
Fun fact: Yamhill County is home to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum, which houses the infamous Spruce Goose, an aircraft commissioned by Howard Hughes in 1947. This remarkable airplane, made almost entirely of wood, still holds the record for the largest wingspan of an aircraft that has ever flown.
