The Official Oregon State Insect
Oregon State Bug
Swallowtail

The Swallowtail, the Oregon state bug, is a large and colorful species of butterfly that can be found in various habitats throughout the state. Its wingspan can reach up to four inches, and it is easily identified by its bright yellow and black pattern. This butterfly is known for its long, curved tails that extend from the back of its wings, giving it a distinctive look. It is also known for its impressive range of flight, as it can travel up to four hundred miles in a single day.

The Swallowtail became the Oregon state insect in 1979, after an extensive lobbying campaign by students and teachers from across the state. This campaign was initiated due to the butterfly’s abundance in Oregon and its popularity among students. The Oregon legislature ultimately decided to make the Swallowtail the official state insect, recognizing its unique beauty and its importance to the environment. The Swallowtail is now celebrated annually, as part of Oregon’s official state insect day.
